WHEN IS A CRAVING OUT OF BALANCE

When it’s interfering with your life. That’s when you need a bridge to help you get to the other side.

THREE UNDERLYING CAUSES:
These can be traced back to events or circumstances.

1-Driven by an underlying anxiety.
2-Longing/need that is not being met; a form of grief.
3-Escape; a form of avoidance.

The largest contributor to strong cravings and addition is an underlying form of anxiety. Even the other two, longing and escape, can be a way of protecting oneself just like anxiety is.

ANXIETY IS A NORMAL PHYSIOLOGICAL REACTION.

The autonomic nervous system controls the flight or fight response that has been termed anxiety when in action.  The autonomic nervous system is the part of us that reacts automatically.  In this case it’s an attempt to protect oneself from danger.

I AM NOT IN DANGER NOW!

When the threat is no longer present, yet the body is still responding to danger, one seeks behavior that is comforting.  This is happening out side of awareness,  because we’re not dealing with that part of us that is consciously aware, and in control. It’s coming from a primal automatic response that has formed a habit.

WHEN DOES A NORMAL PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSE TURN ON US?

When we are still responding to what was either real or perceived as a danger to us; we are under the influence of the less conscious part of our physiology. The automatic one, which does not respond so easily to logic, and sheer will.

It is difficult to get from an habitual, comfort seeking, less conscious behavior to a logical, conscious, balanced behavior. It’s like swimming upstream in a river, thinking that is going to get you to the other side safety. All it does is wear you out!

Once you have the desire to get to the other side, or you have completely wore yourself out; try implementing some tools to communicate with your less conscious self.

HOW ABOUT A BRIDGE?

What if you can start taking a few steps right where you’re at?  Build the trust, and feel the momentum start to form as you keep moving on a solid structure; a foundation whose intention is to get you to the other side where you are at peace and feel safe.
